The road to the upcoming God Help The Girl film took a few years, but it's finally done and it's finally here (in selective theaters and On Demand this Friday, September 5th).
Since the film starred Emily Browning, it also meant that she also had to sing the part. As a result, they went back into the studio to re-record the original God Help The Girl 2009 album. As much as I love the original Catherine Ireton vocals, hearing Browning singing familiar lyrics, I have to say that it added a fresh, new, and exciting perspective to the music.
Songs that I wasn't thrilled about on the 2009 version (for example, "If You Could Speak"), sounded much better in the re-recording. It is possible that the 2009 God Help The Girl album served more, or less, like polished demos, so when they went back to the studios, they knew exactly what worked and what didn't.
So I can't begin to tell you how good the God Help the Girl: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is. The album clocked slightly over an hour with twenty-eight tracks, and all it is worth hearing. There are some throwaway audio dialogue or brief songs that you can only imagine in context to the film, but I'm sure it will all make sense when you see the film.
Not all the songs were re-recorded, familiar Belle & Sebastian songs "Dress Up In You" (from The Life Pursuit) and "F*** this S***" (from Storytelling) also were recycled for this soundtrack. I should also note that I didn't closely examine them, but they sound like the original songs, unmodified or edited.
I don't really know if the soundtrack will appeal to non-B&S fans, but if you are one of the devoted, God Help the Girl: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a must on your playlist. God Help the Girl: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released September 2nd on Milan Records, and the film will be in selected theaters and On Demand September 5th from Amplify.
Please note that a special pre-screening is available from Sound Unseen at McNally Smith College of Music tonight, Thursday, Sept 4 at 7pm.
