The latest UK buzz band, Glass Animals, recently just sold out their show at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, last night, September 9th.
Starting the show a little later than advertised, Atlanta's Rome Fortune sang over pre-recorded loops or remixes of musicians like Beck or Four Tet. His music was really different from the headliner, but apparently Glass Animals were big fans of Rome Fortune's work that they've asked him to support them on this tour.
Highlight of his set was when a fan shouted out, "Ice Cream", which he immediately responded, "We already did that earlier, you should've gotten here on time!" Finally, after some pestering, Rome Fortune played "Tropical" ... then he realized that he still had ten more minutes, so he decided to play some "new sh***" from a forthcoming album he was working on.
He ended his set with "FriendsMaybe", which normally would have featured guest singer/rapper Makonnen, but instead he had to improvised with Mak's vocals as a pre-recorded soundtrack.
Although Glass Animals were previously in Minneapolis on July 11th (the same day as the Basilica Block Party), it would seem that they've quadruple their fanbase, thanks to the local radio station, The Current playing their music. Fans who turned up to last night's event was typical of the station's listeners: a younger crowd, eager to sing along or talk during the songs they didn't know.
The Cedar stage was dimmer than usual, from dim red to even dimmer blues... which seemed intentional as each song got a different mood lighting.
Like many starting bands with only one album (Zaba, released June 2014 via Wolf Tone, Harvest Records) they practically played all their songs known to them. Normally they save their biggest hit songs last, in this case "Pools" was used as the very last song on the encore, leaving the fans on a very strong note.
Singer Dave Bayley would often wave and flail his arms about, when it doesn't require him to play the guitar. Everyone else (Drew MacFarlane, Edmund Irwin-Singer, and Joe Seaward) seemed really seasoned, like they are really enjoying life on the road (in America, at least) and playing in front of an audience... especially one as crowded as last night.
Musically, at least what I heard last night, Glass Animals sounded like Alt-J, particularly in their unconventional melodies and song structures. At time, you can barely understand Bayley's vocals. This may be in part because I was standing right next to their drumkit, but after some fans shouted "turn up the mic!" Bayley asked the soundboard guy politely, "It would seem that we got a request to turn up the mic." Even with the volume turned up, it was still hard to understand the singing style that Bayley employed.
Glass Animals are currently on tour in support of their debut album Zaba. If you love the album, this is definitely the tour to check them out, as you'll likely hear every track live.
