I have an old laptop that basically takes forever to bootup. When the original iPad was released in 2007, I knew this device was going to replace my laptop! I bought the original cellular AT&T version which worked great for a while... but I eventually 'upgrade' to an iPad Mini because of its smaller size and lighter weight.
Recently I have converted my iPad Mini into a productive laptop-style computing, using the old fashion mouse and keyboard combination.
Now for some complaints:
If you don't actively use the mouse, it goes to sleep to conserve battery. You have to click on the button to wake it up. This could be the 'magic mouse' hardware problem, I haven't looked to see if it is fixable with software or settings.
Swipe to scroll does not work. If you want to scroll down, you'll have to drag down.
Logitech mice does not work (I have three of them and none of them shows up on my Bluetooth settings, no issue with the expensive Apple mouse.
Battery usage is pretty ridiculous.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it's working out. I'm writing this post using the keyboard/mouse combo using the Apple Notes. If you have Gmail, it will automatically sync with your Gmail notes so you can continue working on it on a desktop.
The next time I go out of town to cover some music festivals, this little iPad shall be my work horse! I can't wait to test this out in the real world.
If you want to turn your iPad into a laptop, I've broken down the cost for you:
