English two-piece Drenge are currently on tour for their self-titled debut album (Infectious Music), stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night, August 1st.
Opening up the show was New York's Wax Witches, the solo project from Alex Wall, singer/guitarist from Bleeding Knees Club. He's currently touring in support of his recently released album Centre of the Universe (Burger Records).
Like many artists on Burger, Wax Witches is lo-fi, garage-rock, and has that California surf/skate DIY attitude. Later in late October/early November, he will be joining on the popular Burger Records Caravan of the Stars 2014, which we previously covered last year in Austin.
Named NME's "Best New Band of 2013", Drenge have been the talk of the town by fans of British music. Certainly by the time the siblings Eoin and Rory Loveless took the stage, the audience stepped up to the dance floor to show their support.
Apparently the band rose to superstardom quite quickly. They were previously an underground band but shot to national media attention when the band was named in the resignation letter from Labour MP Tom Watson, who wrote "...be that great Labour leader that you can be, but try to have a real life too. And if you want to see an awesome band, I recommend Drenge."
As for their music, they have a very rough, raw sound. You can probably classify it as garage rock, but hearing their hooks and rifts, I think the young band may outgrow this with their next record.
Eoin had very little to say between their songs, once to apologize for having his first American beer and "sorry if things gets a bit s***" and once to thank the crowd, "Thanks very much for coming to see us." Instead, he let us just experience the music as the two brothers thrash and bang their way through their set.
I'm not a music technical person, but I was told by a fan that the way the band was setup, that it was an amp feeding into another amp, resulting in a much louder sound. I'll take his word for it, it definitely sounded louder than usual at the 7th Street Entry.
Typical of brand new bands, they basically played all the songs they knew how to play live with no encores.
If you want to see what all the buzz is about, you definitely need to come check out these guys on their first American tour. They have a great sound and the two brothers are barely in their 20s, so there's still some time for growth.
