Rock the Garden is over. This is just a brief recap of day two of the music festival. Expect a full review later, this is just a quick post to get some information and photographs of the event.
Day 2
Valerie June-
“This is a perfect way to start a Sunday”; Medusa-like hair and a honey smooth voice, playing in a trio. ”We’re going to send the rain away”. Sequed blues classic ‘Rollin and Tumblin’ into her own ‘Workin Woman Blues’
Kurt Vile-
Looks like he could be guitarist for Megadeth, but plays with subtle power; plays with an almost introverted style, After building the noise throughout his set, ended quietly with a soft ‘Dead Alive’.
Dessa-
Riveting hometown performance that had her seeing her own face on the big screen, diving into the audience, throwing gelato, and serenading the crowd as he walked front to soundboard and back. Having Aby Wolf sing harmonies and trade verses was one of the smartest band decisions she’s made. Cecil Otter guested for one song.
Guided by Voices-
“We’re going to do 24 songs for you” …they did 25. “More bang for your buck” declared Robert Pollard. Pollard’s mic taped down from mic swinging, so it wouldn’t fly off into the crowd, and kicked his leg to touch his hand throughout the set. Pollard looking for Westerberg here, not seeing him in 20 times played in the city.
Spoon-
Started with new songs from their upcoming They Want My Soul (out August 5). “I’m not gonna say where we were last night (ed. note: it was Toronto), but it wasn’t this good”- Britt Daniel.
Great to hear ‘You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb’ on the grounds of the famous Spoonbridge and Cherry. Spoon returning to Minneapolis in Sept. with Ema as support.
