St. Paul and the Broken Bones
They may look like the company photo of your accountants or law team, but underneath that façade, St. Paul and the Broken Bones soulfully proves you can’t judge a book by its cover.
The seven-piece Birmingham, AL band formed just two years ago, and has been gathering increasing buzz with a retro-soul sound that harkens back to the honest and pure songs of the 1960’s Staxx and Atlantic Records catalogs. Vocalist Paul Janeway sounds at times like vintage Otis Redding and leads the rising band that unfortunately has no connection to St Paul, MN, though does play across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis (now sold out), as one of the stops on its summer tour in support of their debut full-length, Half the City (Single Lock Records).

Conor Oberst w/ Dawes
Bright Eyes, brighter future.
Omaha singer-songwriter Conor Oberst is back on the road, with an acclaimed new solo album, Upside Down Mountain (Nonesuch Records), a Laurel Canyon inspired release co-produced by Jonathan Wilson and is bringing California band Dawes with him, that act both as opener and as Oberst’s backing band. A return to his earlier, more personal approach to songwriting, expect the prolific songsmith to pepper older Bright Eyes and Mystic Valley Band songs into his set, as well as the more recent solo work.
Dawes, the California foursome that considers Minneapolis as its strongest market, is still in support of its latest, Stories Don’t End (Red/Hub Records), and will no doubt add extra ‘oomph’ to Oberst’s songs, as well as an hour-long set of their own blend of folk/Americana, for a ‘can’t miss’ show.

Band of Skulls w/ Deap Vally
These are the kind of “Nightmares” you want to embrace.
English trio Band of Skulls is on the road in support of its third full-length, Himalayan (Psycollective/Kobalt Records) and its current single, ‘Nightmares’. The new album curiously also features a song titled, ‘I Feel Like Ten Men, Nine Dead and One Dying’ inspired by a phrase from guitarist Russell Marsden’s grandfather, and another called ‘Toreador’, inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s 1932 novel Death In The Afternoon.
The epic-invoking name of the new album’s title, (which was helmed by legendary producer Nick Launay [INXS, The Cribs, Midnight Oil, Nick Cave]), raises the bar of expectations in terms of the band’s live performance. The trio also just performed a special show with a string quartet in Los Angeles, but expect more rocking for the remainder of their tour dates.

MILL CITY NIGHTS
Red Fang w/ Big Business + American Sharks
This so-called “stoner metal” band is one to sink your teeth into.
Portland, OR foursome Red Fang continues its support of last fall’s Whales and Leeches (Relapse Records) with another month on the road, including an upcoming stop at Mill City Nights in Minneapolis. The Portland connection no doubt, lent itself to the band’s association with The Decemberists’ multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk, who produced their most recent effort.
Slower sludgy rock, with some bottom heavy distortion, the tour features openers Big Business (who we liked when they opened for The Sword at the same venue in March) and American Sharks, a crunchy, somewhat punk-inspired three piece from Austin, TX

Chvrches w/ Summer Cannibals
By now, everyone that turns on the radio knows how to spell ‘churches’ with a “V”.
Chvrches, the Scottish electronic trio (Lauren Mayberry [lead vocals/synths/samplers], Iain Cook [synths/guitar/bass/vocals], and Martin Doherty [synths/samplers/vocals]) has been one of the true breakout bands of the last year and comes back to Minneapolis for an already sold-out two night stand, after similar previous shows at The Fine Line Music Café and First Avenue. Their full-length debut, The Bones of What You Believe (Glassnote/Virgin Records) is still riding high in the charts and the band’s singles have now crossed over into other radio formatted stations as well.
After opening for Depeche Mode and doing several festival dates, the band’s “victory lap” in the U.S. has them playing larger clubs again, with a few larger festivals (Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo) thrown in for good measure. Catch them this time, as they likely won’t be playing club-sized venues the next time through.
Portland’s Summer Cannibals (named after the Patti Smith song?) with former Minnesotan and guitarist Marc Swart open, supporting No Makeup on their own New Moss Records.

CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER
Dan Wilson
Minneapolis gets three times lucky.
Hometown musician, songwriter, and producer Dan Wilson returns to the city that gave him his start as a member of Trip Shakespeare and Semisonic, with a trio of already sold-out special shows on his continuing tour in support of his latest full-length, Love Without Fear (Kobalt/Ballroom Music, Ltd).
Night One will feature “Words & Music by Dan Wilson,” an evening of songs and stories that pull back the curtain on the art and practice of his songwriting; Night Two is “Dan Wilson and Friends” and will invite friends and special guest musicians to perform live in concert; and Night Three is deemed a "Chef's Surprise" with elements of nights one and two, with some rare songs and covers performed along the way.
Wilson is maybe best known outside of the area for his songwriting and producing collaborations with the likes of Adele and The Dixie Chicks (which won him Grammy Awards in both cases), but has a more personal (but no less ear-friendly) approach to his own work, and in concert is an ideal way to experience it all. An experienced painter and printmaker that attended Harvard, his recent art obsession involves hand done calligraphy, so maybe check the merch booth for an example of his visual work as well.

7TH STREET ENTRY
Alpha Consumer w/ BBGun
Minneapolis-based three piece Alpha Consumer's debut Meat album release party is taking place next Saturday, June 7th. The band got a nice mention from Mojo, describing them as "The Modern Lovers meets Talking Heads.... in truth, they're more entertaining than that."
Their press page lists that members of Alpha Consumer have worked with practically everyone in the industry, including Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Chuck Statler, Brother Ali, Anais Mitchell, Pieta Brown, A Prairie Home Companion, etc.... I guess it's about time they decided to strike out on their own.
Tour dates:
Jun 26 Rockwood Music Hall New York, NY
Jul 01 Knitting Factory Brooklyn, NY
