Free Comic Book Day is alive and well in the Twin Cities!
The nationwide event, now in its 12th year, was celebrated in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area by most comic book stores opening their doors to welcome readers with a huge array of free comic books and associated sales and promotions.
For Free Comic Book Day (held the first Saturday in May), publishers produce special edition comics geared to attracting new non-comic readers.
There is a wide diversity of comics available, from traditional comics fare like Archie and Disney, super-heroes from Marvel and DC, manga, all-ages centered books, and work from several independent publishers.
In addition to all the free comics given away, here is a more detailed rundown from just a few of the area stores:
Source Comics and Games (Falcon Heights)
Gave away over 33,000 comics to a waiting line that ran all the way around the store, and halfway around the nearby McDonalds parking lot. Giveaways and cosplayers kept the line entertained and inside, there were prize drawings, refreshments, and appearances by artists including Gordon Purcell, Pat Gleason, Christopher Jones, and others.
Mind's Eye Comics (Eagan)
The start of a progressive four-day sale, going on now through Tuesday, with deep discounts in every category and additional mystery day-of coupon savings
Hot Comics (Richfield)
Storewide sale with varying discounts on all types of items, 10-comic grab bags with any purchase
Uncle Sven's Comic Shoppe (St. Paul)
Storewide sale, prize giveaways, and more
Comic Book College (Minneapolis)
Appearance by legendary artist and writer Dan Jurgens (who has worked on almost every major character in both Marvel and DC Universes) stopped by to meet fans and sign the DC-released FCBD New 52: Futures End.
