Here is another flashback article for you.
I attended The Creatures show at the Palace in Hollywood on July 15th, however, since I couldn't find their setlist for this particular show, I'm listing their set from the day before. I am assuming the set was similar, perhaps different covers (but I doubt it). The Creatures was basically the main band from Siouxsie Sioux and Budgie, after Siouxsie and the Banshees broke up in 1996.
Like many of these early shows, I have strong memories are with my friends and the stories leading up to the show, not of the actual show itself.
At this time, I met up with Jon Stewart from my favorite Britpop band, Sleeper, and we had dinner with him in Los Angeles, prior to seeing The Creatures. Jon was living in Los Angeles at the time, temporarily. At this time, their third album Pleased To Meet You had just came out in the U.K., and he tells us that it looked bleak for a U.S. release:
So, funny enough, the reason why Mel (RIP) chose this particular restaurant in Los Angeles was because she wanted to get a photograph of us outside this S&M store called "Dorothy's Surrender". It's an inside joke, because Sleeper was originally called Surrender Dorothy.
After dinner, we drove to the Palace in Hollywood (which is really Los Angeles), and we had balcony seats. I don't think they were great seats, but I remember clearly seeing drummer Budgie in the spotlight/center as singer Siouxsie Sioux danced around and singing her black heart out.
John Cale was the opener, but what made his support so interesting is that he did not do full sets. According to Hans Werksman, Cale played five songs solo ("Lament", "Riverbank", "Fear Is A Man's Best Friend", "Magazines", and "Hedda Gabler"), before the Creatures came on stage.
After The Creatures played their set, they took a break, and Cale would come back on stage to finish his set, which included "Heartbreak Hotel", "Evidence", "Model Beirut Recital", "Leaving It Up To You", and "Fear Is A Man's Best Friend".
This is a really interesting way of incorporating the opening band with the main attraction. The Creatures came back on to play "Standing There" until the finale, "Exterminating Angel".
From my poor memory, Siouxsie Sioux was dressed in all black and I want to say Budgie possibly was shirtless. Again, I was seated the whole time and could view the stage from an aerial view - so I probably had front seats. Generally in these "seated shows" people would all stand, and I distinctively remember us sitting (I would only stand if someone in front decide to stand up and then I have to fight to get a glimpse of the stage, etc).
As much as I love Siouxsie and the Banshee, I wasn't all that familiar with The Creatures, so I really couldn't tell what songs were played (other than what was provided on the setlist). At this time, Mel told me the Budgie was married to Siouxsie, so I saw that strong connection they had on stage. The two would often interact with each other, and, as I recall, the drums were really loud and rhythmic... almost like a tribal direction.
As a tribute to the John Cale and The Velvet Underground, Cale would later resurface to help The Creatures cover "Venus In Furs" for the encore. I see that they had a double encore Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso" which is a song that I've always liked.
I remember "Pablo Picasso" and the V.U. cover song, because Mel and I had a long discussion on those cover songs on the drive back home to Fresno, California.
