The advent of a chilly new year puts us at the midway point of this second season of Liquid Music, a concert series presented by The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra that "expands the world of classical music through innovative new projects, boundary-defying artists, and unique presentation formats."
This weekend brings American violinist Hilary Hahn and Volker Bertelmann, the German master of prepared-piano known as Hauschka, to Minneapolis to perform selections from their collaborative effort, Silfra (released in 2012 by Universal / Deutsche Grammophone).
The duo, introduced to each other by folk musician Tom Brosseau, concocted their album of improvisations in Iceland (speaking of cold places) and is marked by a unique exploration of how to co-exist in each other’s soundspace.
Both have previously expanded the boundaries of their own sound; Hahn, the protégé violinist has previously worked with Josh Ritter and …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, and Hauschka has previously worked with Calexico and múm.
Together, their performance promises a lively, yet precise look into their shared world.
