I know Low is well-loved, but the band's music was just not my thing. But for free, yeah, I'll definitely show up to their show.
Before First Avenue filed bankruptcy, they used to give out complimentary concert tickets if you showed up early to a show. Usually they release promo tickets (whatever they couldn't sell in advance) a week before the show, in hopes that it would drive up attendance.
Logically, it made sense: if people got in free, they might be incline to spend their money on drinks or band merchandise. On the other hand, it was a bit of a scam for people who frequent First Avenue. I was going to so many shows (and showing up early), that I eventually got tickets to most of the shows I actually would have paid money to attend! Sometime, I've already bought advance tickets, so I usually give the extra free ticket to friends or family. Anyway, it was a good deal, but after 2004, free shows were no more under new management.
Anyway, this show was for presented by Pop for Charity, and sponsored by Pulse Magazine (remember them?), Grumpy's, Moxie Hair Salon, and Radio K. They probably had all three bands, Low, Smattering, and Live in Japan, donate their time for free, so I'm assuming all three bands are local (local meaning near or around Minneapolis, and, yes, Duluth is considered 'local').
As for the show, the only thing I can remember was that Low came on stage with a chair. Singer Alan Sparhawk sat down and played some acoustic numbers, which inspired about twenty or so people in front to also sit down in the center. The whole thing had, if you'll excuse the pun, low energy.
The highlight of the show for me was when Low covered The Smiths' "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me".
Recently, Low released The Invisible Way, which came out March 19, 2013, on Sub Pop Records. The band just wrapped up their UK tour in November, and they're taking it easy for the winter.
