The Friday-Monday holiday weekend, typically marks the last days of summer, and is traditionally filled with barbeques, festivals, and a general excuse to party. At First Avenue’s Mainroom Tuesday, 21 year-old Australian DJ Flume (AKA Harley Streten), filled the club with EDM fans not ready to give up their summer celebrations just yet.

Though from Sydney, his hip-hop influence is also indelible; utilizing a J Dilla-esque method of chopping and dropping, using guest MCs, and sampling classics like Notorious B.I.G.‘s ‘Juicy’.

Most of the vocalists on the album joined the live show ‘virtually’ – via taped audio and/or video images, but the crowd didn’t mind that Streten was the only one on stage. The setup, in addition to the long DJ table, was a full screen background, flashing trippy 8-bit images, and a hexagonal infinity light display in front, often pulsing to the rhythm of the music.
‘Sleepless’, his initial single, thumped in urgency while the piped-in vocals of Jezzabell Doran gave the track an ethereal dream-pop quality, and everyone moved and clapped in unison to the chorus in ‘Holdin’ On’, which can be heard on local radio.
Another late set highlight, was the remix of Hermitude’s ‘HyperParadise’, (the video of which is currently at 1.8 million views and counting, on YouTube), bass vibrating the concrete floors of First Avenue even more than previous.
The 21 year-old proved his salt live- able to mix genres and sounds into a fresh mixing pot, to keep the crowd entertained and dancing the entire show. After the final encore (which sampled Editors’ ‘Racing Rats’), Streten still seemed amazed at the crowd, “It’s A Tuesday night…what the f##k are you guys doing?! I’m gonna be back soon!” And with that, we know another extended party weekend will be in order.
