Experimental UK folk musician Duke Garwood is probably not a familiar name this side of the Atlantic. Garwood first cut his chops playing guitar on The Orb’s “Perpetual Dawn†in the late 80s and since then has worked with the band Archie Bronson Outfit, shared the stage with Wire and Kurt Vile and has put four solo records under his belt this past May released
Black Pudding, his blues-y collaboration with Mark Lanegan. Lanegan himself has called Garwood “one of [his] all time favorite artists†and the British press often refer to Garwood as Lanegan’s “spiritual cousin.†It’s not hard to see why; Garwood is a gifted instrumentalist with a talent for creating sometimes ethereal, sometimes dissonant atmospheres. Lanegan’s gravelly baritone fits perfectly into Garwood’s languid, haunted arrangements. Check out the sinister minor-key meditation of “Thank You†or the sleep-walking guitar on “Mescalito.â€
Garwood also made an appearance on current tourmates post-punk band Savages’ album
Silence Yourself. The stunning, wailing track “Marshal Dear†features Garwood on great freaked-out clarinet solo that brings the song to a close.
Duke Garwood will be opening for Savages Tuesday September 17th in the Mainroom at First Avenue.
