Originally on a headlining tour of their own, at nearly the last minute Still Corners got added to the opening slot for buzz band CHVRCHES. They played a sold out show this past Saturday night at the Fine Line Music Cafe. I was a little bummed that they were merely openers, however. I'm not big on buzz bands, and especially all the people that typically jump on the hype bandwagon. Therefore, even against all the claims about CHVRCHES being amazing live, I skipped out on their show and instead just watched who I came to see: Still Corners. And they did not disappoint.
Still Corners started their set with the song 'Cuckoo', a personal favorite song that was released on the 2011 album 'Creatures of an Hour'. Singer Tessa Murray stared out at the crowd with intense eyes as she sang over the pulsating beat and simple instrumentation. Next up was "Beatcity', a synth-laden, dancey tune where Murray sang breathily 'I haven't see you for some time..". They then reverted back to an older song 'Into the Trees', an infectiously cool song with a repetitive guitar line, more breathy vocals and precise percussion.
The stage was littered with heaps of keyboards and synths that were waiting to be used by CHVRCHES, and which left Still Corners about 3/4 of the stage to work with. Despite that setback, the band made good use of what space they had to work with, even employing a screen behind them to exhibit colorful projected images as they played. The psychedelic images depicted on the screen added to the mystique of the band's stage presence and to the cinematic feel of their songs.
'Beginning to Blue', the second track off their new album 'Strange Pleasures', was played beautifully and has the breezy quality that is sure to make it as one of my summer jams. Speaking of summer jams, 'Endless Summer' was next, and is easily one of my favorites they played of the night. It's the first track of theirs that I ever heard and it's since remained on my top tracks of all time list. Beginning with the Phil Spector-ish drum beat and tremolo keyboard notes that play throughout, the pace picks up just enough, ending with a cool spaced-out guitar solo that they played flawlessly.
Without too much interaction with the crowd, instead focusing on delivering their music to us in the small amount of allotted time, I believe they secured more than a few new fans. I'm sure that's a huge reason why they agreed to tour and open for CHVRCHES and that seems to be a very smart move. Still Corners is one band I wouldn't mind seeing and hearing more of, especially in the press world. They deserve all the respect and hype they can ever manage to achieve.

'Fireflies' was far too catchy and delicious to ignore
They kept on with their dreamy set with 'Berlin Lovers', a super synth-ed out and catchy new song. Multi-instrumentalist and founding member Greg Hughes, donning a black and white Hawaiian shirt, played his Moog with complete coolness. The band switched gears and played their very Broadcast-esque song 'Submarine', another personal highlight of the night. Next was the single off 'Strange Pleasures', 'Fireflies'. When the song was first released, prior to the album's release, I wasn't too sure about the new sound they were presenting. It was a slightly more polished sound compared to their last album (that I completely adored), but 'Fireflies' was far too catchy and delicious to ignore. The rest of the album took time to grow on me, but I can attest the whole thing is so good and will be my soundtrack for summer! They played 'Fireflies' beautifully, then finished off the set with three other news ones: 'Midnight Drive', 'Future Age' and ending with the super cool and catchy 'The Trip'.
