If you're not familiar with Mount Kimbie, the duo consisting of Kai Campos and Dom Maker, their music runs the gamut of genres, more closely identifying with dubstep and general electronica, but with surprising elements of everything else in between. I enjoyed the privilege of seeing Mount Kimbie play in the spring of 2011 in Salt Lake City, on a tour where they opened for the rather gimmicky band Beats Antique. I had listened to everything recorded by them at that point and was so excited to see how it would translate live. Their show, complete with live guitars as well as the obvious synths, drum pads and occasional vocals, blew my mind. Those boys know how to put on a live show. The set seemed so carefully thought out, with each new song bleeding into another almost seamlessly.
They just released their newest album last week, titled 'Cold Spring Fault Less Youth'. After more than a few listens, I'm absolutely hooked once again to their sound. They took a bold leap with this release, incorporating mostly live instrumentation, rather than the usuals of electronic music of computerized beats and sounds. On top of that, the album features vocals by both Campos and Maker as well as up-and-coming musician/vocalist/rapper King Krule. (King Krule released an EP in late 2011 that I have definitely listened to more times than I would like to admit. He was previously known as Zoo Kid and has proven himself to be a musical wunderkind of sorts with all he's accomplished at his now tender age of 19.) The album from start to finish is so delicious I can't help but be obsessed. It even caught the ears/attention of NPR, as they recently featured them on their site and offered up a stream of the new album before it had even been released.
I could go on with praise and adoration for Mount Kimbie, but I just suggest that you see for yourself when they play in Minneapolis at the Fine Line Music Cafe on Monday, June 10. The show is 18+, tickets are $15 and can be found here.
