Calgary's Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk is releasing Over Land And Sea next week, April 9th, 2013, on Wanderer Records. I really love it, mostly because of the great folk melodies and singer Lauren Mann's vocals sounding a bit like Beth Orton.
As an introduction, Lauren Mann started her career in 2008 and by 2010 released her debut album, Stories From Home. Her live band of local Calgary musicians became known as her "Fairly Odd Folk". Currently, the Fairly Odd Folk consists of Jay Christman (drums, guitar), Jessica Christman (bass, additional keys, BGV’s), and Zoltan Szoges (additional keys, percussion, glockenspiel).
With Over Land And Sea, it would seem to me that they're little stories about searching for love and being lost and travelling to find it. The theme is sprinkled here and there in her lyrics, "to travel from here to there and back again somewhere on that weathered road" ("I Lost Myself") to "find the greatest hiding place, far away from everything ("Let's Make Our Escape") to "I’ll get lost and found in your arms ("Dance With Me") to "So I found the place where we first embraced, where I fell for you" ("Love, I Lost") to the title track with "the north wind brings its winter freeze, but I've got everything I need… except my love, come back to me" ("Over Land And Sea").
Perhaps I'm reading too much in the lyrics, they are not depressing songs by any means, most of these songs Over Land And Sea are fun and upbeat.
