THE MOWGLI'S SETLIST
|
The positive energy continued with fellow Los Angeles-based Family of the Year (brothers Joe and Sebastian Keefe, James Buckey, Christina Schroeter, Alex Walker) taking the stage next, for 50 more minutes of feel good vibes and melodies, promoting their recent full-length, 'Loma Vista' (Nettwerk). Beginning with 'Buried' with its ominous lyrics against lightened harmonies, then commenting how good the audience looked, the band next went into a buoyant 'Chugjug' from their first record, several crowd members scratching their head looking for recognition, likely not realizing it was also the soundtrack for an Advil commercial. Their alt-folk stylings with male/female vocals were an immediate hit with the crowd, the band commenting that Minneapolis was their first sellout ever (a late Jan. gig at 7th St Entry), making their Triple Rock sellout a bit of a victory lap.
The crowd sang along to 'Living on Love' and 'St Croix', the latter with its infectious chorus, "You bring the ocean, I'll bring the motion, Together we'll make a love potion". A raucous 'In the End' followed, then the crowd hushed for the radio single 'Hero', which had many whispering the lyrics back in unison. Momentum picked back up with 'Stupidland' before ending the set with an almost-disco / Scissor Sisters-like 'Psyche or Like Scope' (from their first ep), with the appropriate ending lyric, "oh yeah, we've got somewhere to go tonight". Both bands turned up the energy live, versus a more laid back feel of their recorded songs, and willingly attracted the Minnesota crowd into a taste of SoCal soulful harmonic folk/pop. Family of the Year even kept the West Coast good-feeling groove alive by offering their latest CD at the merch table at a price of "whatever you can pay". Peace and love indeed.
