Dallas-based Jeff Ryan is releasing
We Were Here EP on February 26th, 2013, under his stagename "Myopic". I should also point out that he may run into problems using that name, as there is a death metal band using the same name.
Myopic's music is atmospheric electronica. I have said this before, but this really isn't my genre of choice. With that disclaimer out of the way, it would seem to me that Myopic's
We Were Here EP is for fans of that electronica genre. There are five full tracks with two bookend tracks (intro and outro both almost identical excerpts from their song "Puzzle Pieces").
These songs seems like they belong as a movie soundtrack, perhaps watching a bicycle commute or a subway train or watching the landscape from a motor vehicle. It is not meant the driver, instead, I think the music really is designed to be consumed as a passive passenger.
It’s literally about doing something before it’s too late.
Ryan offered this explanation to the theme of
We Were Here, "It’s literally about doing something before it’s too late. I wrote and recorded the song ‘we were here’ in one day, which perfectly encapsulates the meaning of the record, as in ‘You’re here now, so do something that means something to you.’ I literally grabbed every instrument that I had close to me, hence the name myopic.â€
What I do like about it is that the tracks are not repetitive, but then I would also add that I also can't distinguish individual songs. To make it worst, there are no vocals on the song, so the songs seems like they blend together for me - which probably work as a concept album.
There is no thumping dance beats, so look elsewhere if that's your sort of thing… the most energetic it gets is 3:30 into "Toner". Ryan lists Orbital, Aphex Twin, and Kraftwerk as inspiration for his music, and I can see elements of them in his work. If you like those electronic acts, then definitely check out Myopic.
Myopic's
We Were Here will be available February 26th, via Simulacra Records.
