The last time I saw the Eels was October of 2010 at First Avenue’s mainroom. It was a surprisingly bad show, but not because of the band. Everett is a passionate performer especially when he’s backed by a full band. The band was excellent and Everett was at eccentric heights, howling under the hot stage lights while dressed in a white hooded jumpsuit. The crowd, however, was drunk, aggressive and/or obnoxious, heckling the second opener simply for wearing bird feathers in her hair. How does a man like Everett, who has built his musical career on deeply personal, often delicate songs about the tragedies and frustrations of life, possibly attract a fan base so f*cking awful? Eels had just released their album Hombre Lobo, an album that was certainly leaner and more rocking than the previous outing (2005’s magnum opus Blinking Lights and Other Revelations), which bore the subtitle “12 Songs of Desire.” Perhaps people’s desire was a little misplaced; were they in fact here to watch the band or did they get lost on their way to Champps?
Either way, it’s always a lively good time when the Eels play First Avenue. Check them out on February 22nd. For those who can’t wait, check out the short video from Judd Apatow’s new film This is 40. It features Everett playing a new tune for Paul Rudd’s character who is courting Eels for his failing indie record label.
