As I previously mentioned, Tamaryn is a singer from New Zealand, but currently living in San Francisco. Her main collaborator is Rex John Shelverton, who was with Tamaryn for their debut album, The Waves, in 2010. They are currently on tour in support of their recently released album, Tender New Signs.
Last night's show is what you'd expect from a shoegazing show: dimly lit atmosphere with movie projection accompanied by heavy guitar effects and distorted undistinguished vocals. The only thing missing off my checklist is a smoke machine.
Singer Tamaryn spent most of the time with hair in her face, introspective-like... but once in a while, she does break out some dance moves! Music wise, the band is tight, I got the impression that they are in very good practice and this wasn't their first rodeo. There were no stage banters, so I couldn't tell if Tamaryn still had her kiwi accent.
Turnout to this Thursday show was surprisingly very good. There is definitely a shoegazing scene here, and most interesting point of a mix of really old or really young fans.
The first half of their set seems more melodic, but as they started on "Love Fade" did I felt the show really started to pick up. They played straight through the encore (never stepping off the stage) with a medley of "The Waves" and "I'm Gone."
Please refer to the setlist to see the full listing.
Tamaryn is currently on tour in support of Tender New Signs, out on Mexican Summer. They recently announced the video for "The Garden" (directed by Miko Revereza) on youtube.com.
PS Apologies to Young Prisms, this is the second time I've missed you. Maybe we're just not meant to meet.
