At that time (in 2008), we were making it a big deal that they landed on the cover of AP Magazine …

What we have is a recording that lasted less than two minutes. Apologies to Anberlin for my flaky internet connection, it was outside of my control.
I spoke with Nick Young, drummer for Anberlin, and asked him a few questions that were not recorded.
On the subject of cover songs, he said that Anberlin covered a ton of bands, including New Order, The Smiths, The Cure, etc. Although he loves playing them, he is more interested in doing their own original songs. He personally doesn't want to mess up the original songs, and fans either love it or hate it with passion. I think he was trying to say that cover songs are always going to be compared to the original and it can get messy.
They are very excited to tour with Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan asked them personally and, of course, everyone in Anberlin are big fans of Smashing Pumpkins, so they jumped on the chance.
They recently tour earlier this summer, billed as an "acoustic tour," included everyone in the band unplugged. "We love it," Nick said, "It was nothing like what we've ever done before. We'd changed the songs up a little. Mix it up a little."
They are eager to do another acoustic tour soon.
Anberlin just dropped Vital yesterday October 16th via Universal Republic. When I asked about all the fans and critics alike were saying how Vital was basically a return to Cities's greatness, Nick had this to say, "It's funny how people forget, but when Cities came out, it didn't get such a good reaction. Over time, they loved it, but it was a slow build."
He remembered how they streamed the whole album Vital on KROQ and fans were going absolutely nuts over the new songs. When I asked how well he thinks Vital will chart, he laughs and said, "The music industry changes all the time. I felt like it's changing every hour. Charting isn't that important to me. It's the fans, that's who we care about."
Finally, before I let Nick go, I quickly asked him about the cover artwork. I had assumed singer Stephen Christian had picked it, so I was hesitant to ask. As it turns out: Nick was the guy behind choosing the cover!
Nick said the photograph is by Aaron Sever (I am probably misspelling his name), and when he first saw it, "I was drawn to it." He told me a little secret about the photo, which I won't mention because it absolutely changes the way you see the image.
Anberlin is currently on tour with Smashing Pumpkins in support of Vital. The album is out now on Universal Republic.
