On Tuesday night, October 16th, the Lumineers brought some friends (seven-piece folk rockers Paper Bird), bass player, and a keyboardist to throw down a party at the House of Blues.
The Denver quintet delivered quite the performance to the sold out New Orleans crowd. Not a surprise, since the Lumineers are selling out every venue! Plus, they are opening for Dave Matthews Band in a few months. The Lumineers only have one record, a self titled LP, released back on April 3rd 2012, so they basically played almost the entire album. The band threw in a Bob Dylan cover, a Taking Heads cover, and, to cap off the night, a cover of The Band's "The Weight". The soulful crowd was singing all night and everybody chimed in to end the night for the Lumineers' three song encore. During the encore, the band played in the middle of the crowd, stood on the chairs, and gave fans a barnyard effect. The Lumineers (Jeremiah Fraites with suspenders and a top hat, Neyla Pekarek the charismatic cellist/mandolinist, and Wesley Schultz as the footstomping frontman) are as country as they get. I still can't believe these guys aren't from the south. Luckily, their music is far from Garth Brooks-styled country, and more like Bob Dylan/Johnny Cash. The last time the Lumineers were in New Orleans, they played a bar that held about 75 people called the Circle Bar. Man, I wish I could have been at that gig! This country/western style band is making the Mumford and Sons quick rise to fame. I'd say it could turn into quite the race! The Lumineers are currently on tour in support of their self-titled debut album, which is out now via Dualtone Music Group. The album landed in the top 10 albums on iTunes and have been in Billboard top 100 for six straight weeks (currently back on iTunes' top 10 albums overall). |
