IAMDYNAMITE returned to Minneapolis at the Varsity Theater last night, July 26th.
Opening up was Minneapolis' Red Daughters. The thing about this five-piece band is that the drummer does most of the singing. Didn't really know their songs, but some of their songs they did were called "Renegade," "Egypt" (which is not actually called "Egypt"), and they ended their set with "Cool Guy."
IAMDYNAMITE's singer and guitarist, Christopher Martin (not to be confused with the Coldplay guy), is in a dress shirt & trouser with a bow tie and Buddy Holly glasses. Pretty geeky. What's missing? His shoes.
The duo seems to josh around on stage. For instance they claimed was drummer Chris Phillips' birthday (not).
IAMDYNAMITE played loud catchy punk-pop songs. Pretty much every song from SUPERMEGAFANTASTIC, like "OEO," "Hey Girl," "Where Will We Go," were played. "Carolina" was dedicated to Anne Murray, who was a running joke for the band because Phillips was wearing an autographed Murray T-Shirt.
Two songs for the encore: a wonderful hard cover version of the Bangles' "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Stereo." They picked five young boys on stage to playing tambourines for the encores. It was the first concert ever for some of the guys on stage, so what a treat to be playing alongside with the band!
