Peter Wolf Crier's CD release show at first seemed as if it were beginning their mostly east coast tour with a rough start. Technical issues concerning Pete Pisano's microphone delayed multiple songs, most notably the first one. Although it irritated him, it gave him the opportunity to engage in banter with his most forgiving audience, that of his hometown. Once confirming that everything was in operating condition, the band ripped through a set of mostly new songs - it was a CD release, after all.
These new tracks were muscular and dynamic; those with a keen eye will have noticed Brian Moen's drumsticks splintering multiple times from the sheer velocity at which he hit his cymbals, once resulting in a drumstick chunk flying entirely across the stage and landing in Pisano's lap (!). All concerns about the show being shaky were quickly invalidated as the band confidently cruised through a substantial chunk of fresh material that allowed them to go from solo voice and acoustic passages to all out raucous noisefests involving Pisano activating every effects pedal he has.
After the show, one of my friends approached me and started listing bands whose influences he noticed being represented in this new material and mentioned groups as diverse as The Black Keys and Radiohead - comparisons that are particularly impressive when you consider that there were only three musicians on stage (an auxiliary keyboard/organ player sits in with the duo during gigs).
