SUNCHASERS Read More Bicycle Film Festival Bicycle Film Festival, aka BFF, is taking place this late July... If you've got a thing for bicycles and movies and beers...

The main feature, Sunchasers, is about three disabled women training and eventually competing in the Beijing 2008 Paralympics.
While two of the women's disabilities were made clear (one is legally blind, one is missing her left arm), I felt that the filmmaker didn't make clear what Barbara's problems were. Sure, they showed pictures of her accident, but I found it hard to follow. What caused the accident? In the photos, which one was her (I couldn't tell). Maybe they could have her doctor explain her condition and maybe drew a circle around which of the women lying on the ground was Barb.
Some of the editing choices were weird, like why was Greta's hair long here but short in the next clip? I understand they were editing together footage from the course of of three years, but maybe they could label the date and/or include names (for instance, why are they talking to her roommate, or was that another disabled competitor?)
That was really my only problem with the documentary, at times I was lost on who's who and what's what, otherwise, the documentary does a great job focusing on these women's training and overcoming their disabilities and become the best riders. I know I couldn't do what they do.
Anyroad, I thought the short films were great, all from five to ten minutes. The subject matter ranged from "have more bike lanes" in South Korea message (can someone tell me why was the pavement were sprayed in English letterings?) to the poor inception of the bike lane on First Street in New York to the life of an extreme Italian BMX rider... a pretty good mix.
Pipettes: Rose Elinor Dougall |
A little trivia for you, one of the three bike girls happens to be Rose Pipette! I recognized her right away, because I'm in love with her (although I gave her solo album a poor review).
Today (Saturday) is the last of BFF film series, movie time starts at 5pm (Scavenger hunt at 1pm) and ends at 10:30pm at the St Anthony Main. I bought a pair of BFF socks, so I'll be bicycling into the city in style.
