They started off with a Blondie cover, "Heart of Glass", and I already knew I was going to like him.
Gordon Voidwell's looks and sounds, definitely screamed "New York" all over it, and as fun as they were on stage, it felt like a really short setlist of only five or six songs. They ended their set with "Party Song", which requires the audience to sing back "ooo-oooo".
As for Mayer Hawthorne, to give you an idea of his music, he is basically a white dude that sings soul music.... and he's good at it. He looks a bit like Buddy Holly, although he will tell you that he looks like Toby Maguire, based on a funny story that happened to him at the airport. Hawthorne is down to earth too, he's the sort of guy that will take his limo through the McDonald's drive-through for a McRib. Yummy.

The only audience participation he asked was before "I Wish It Would Rain", he had the audience do raindrops with their hands. Most of the songs were sung by Hawthorne, except for "Ruthless", which his guitarist took over the singing role.
The highlights for me were his covers, he did a Snoop Doggy Dog cover, "Gangsta Luv", and I want to say a Hall & Oates song, but I don't remember which one. It's not listed on his setlist, so perhaps my memory is faulty.
Mayer Hawthorne and Gordon Voidwell are ending their tour soon, so if you get a chance to see them, try and make it. I know the New York party sound does not suit well with classic R&B Soul music, but it's good bill - especially because I know with all the excellent Mazda things you can do while you're there.
