What makes Stereo Total so amazing is the fact that they write and sing their songs in a variety of languages. Primarily in German, French, and English, but it's been known that they also sing in Japanese, Spanish, and even Turkish. With their latest album, Baby Ouh!, out tomorrow, May 4th, on Kill Rock Stars Records, you instantly hear Japanese on "Alaska" and Spanish on "No Controles" (which incidentally is on their all-Spanish album, No Controles).
I've already pre-ordered my copy of Baby Ouh! from KRS which will come with a folded promo poster, Anti Love Song 7" and sticker/digital sampler. Also, all orders comes automatically with a digital copy of your order (very nice so you don't have to wait for the physical CD to arrive at your house). If you're still not convince, a free download of "Baby Ouh" title track is available as a free MP3 download.
Since I already own all, or at least most, of Stereo Total's previous releases, I can tell you that this new album is very pop-oriented. There's a lot of catchy and dancy songs, particularly keen on "Larmes De Métal", "No Controles", and "Wenn Ich Ein Junge Wär". The latter song is a cover song from Nina Hagen and it's about wanting to be a boy.
Brezel Göring get to shine a bit with his hilarious "I Wanna Be A Mama", about wanting to raise a baby called Lucifer. The lyrics might offend some mothers out there, but don't take it too seriously. The song is a bit of a joke and it's good to hear Göring singing again.
Françoise Cactus, is as usual sounding really good. The "Hello Ladies" intro song at the beginning, is about an old janitor lady reminiscing about her youth as she cleans the toilets. The song is quite electro, with its "Hello Ladies, Toilet lady!", but it's catchy. While the warped audio of Cactus is fine for that type of song, I think she really shines when it's just a simple song like the outro, "Violent Love".
Personally, I feel Baby Ouh! is such a great pop album, it's possibly my favorite so far. I have been listening to it a million time in my car, and the songs never gets old (although I do confess that I skip over the "Andy Warhol" song more often than I should).
Look for them on tour in the US this August. Unfortunately, they will not be stopping in Minneapolis (the last time they played at the Triple Rock), but it's understandable since I feel Minneapolis don't have a large audience that appreciate this type of DIY music.
PS, apparently they've written over forty songs for this new album - but only about half of it made it onto Baby Ouh! - so perhaps another release is pending soon? Can't wait!
