I won't spend too much time talking about Those Darlins, since this is my third time I've seen them. You know what they're like, drinkin', swearin' and just being boys.
I was a little disappointed to not see favorites like "Funstix Party" and "The Whole Damn Thing", but all is forgiven as they've still got "DUI or Die", "Wild One" and, of course, "Shakin' All Over". The later song had the whole Deer Tick band joining them on stage (see sporadic video - sorry it's hard to stay steady when you're dancing).
Deer Tick hasn't been to Minneapolis in about five years, so they were pretty eager to play some new (and old favorites) to their fans. You can tell when the old stuff was played as the fans in the front were all singing along to such songs like "Ashamed" and "Baltimore Blues".
I think most of their setlist, they did songs from Born On Flag Day, they definitely did "Smith Hill" (which is available as a free track). I think the highlight for me was hearing "Hope Is Big" dedicated to Kelley Darlin as a bunch of her hair got stuck in Ian O'Neil's guitars. Although Those Darlins have left the stage, it seems like they were still part of Deer Tick's show, especially when Jessi Darlin was shouting "YOU SUCK!" between their songs. Too funny.
Deer Tick (with Nikki Darlin) - Triple Rock, Minneapolis (4/9/10) |
In the middle of their set, most of the band members left the stage to leave a lone singer John McCauley on stage. McCauley explained that he wrote "Twenty Miles" and it was personal to him. He's referring to Deer Tick's forthcoming album, The Black Dirt Sessions for June 8th, 2010, via Partisan Records.
They did two encores, but as a special bonus, Nikki Darlin joined Deer Tick on stage (see photo) to sing a duet for a third encore song. I didn't quite catch the song title, but as I understand it, the song was written by John and Nikki.
Overall, a fun-filled evening and you leave the venue smelling like whiskey.
