Blue Sky Blackout was far from the "special semi-acoustic set" that was promised. This was a full band, three guitarists and one bassist. Apparently the bassist just flew into Minneapolis that day and was rushed to the venue. I wasn't too familiar with the band, but they have some catchy tunes.
Mercurial Rage was surprisingly more electro-dance than I had imagined. Songs about sex and selling your soul for sex and robot sex and having a girlfriend (for sex) was a common theme in their songs. I don't know if they normally don't have a drummer, but last night, there was no drummer to be found.
The highlight for me was their end song, "Out Of Control", which actually medley a bit of The Happy Monday's "24 Hour Party People". Then it hit me, Mercurial Rage is trying to be early 90s Madchester.

Surprisingly for their "first ever" gig, they seem to have it altogether. They played all their songs from their EP #1, plus a few new one. I don't remember most of them, but one of those songs was "Just Got Paid", which sounds promising.
Red Pens were the last band on the bill, so technically, at least to me, that meant that they were the headline for this gig. Which is great, because all of the times I've seen them, they were always the band that opened up for other bands.
I briefly talked to Howard prior to their show and found out that one of the more memorable moments on their East Coast tour was that they day they arrived in New York, there was a blizzard. (I know Minnesotans may laugh at how snow basically shut down New York and Washington for a few days because they aren't prepared to handle snow).
As usual, the band is in top form, although they faltered a bit on one of their song and had to restart. They ended their set with "Panama", however due to audiences' demands, they played another song - one that required a "purple comb".
Highlight for me was "Hung Out", I think this song just gets better the longer they play it.
Find out why fans and City Pages called Red Pens, the #1 Picked to Click new band (beating out Zoo Animals, Moonstone and Caroline Smith), you should definitely check them out if you're in the Minneapolis area.
Below are some photos and one video. Apology for the Vimeo video - the website re-encoded the 8000 kbit/s to a lower bitrate, so it looks awful.
