Lately, Slumberland Records has been the go-to label for insanely catchy, beautifully crafted pop. When the Pains of Being Pure at Heart were seen on Carson Daly’s (rarely watched) late night talk show, more than a few pop enthusiasts were squirming in their elitist boots. But I find it hard to imagine twee “selling out,” especially with labels like Slumberland consistently releasing pop gems, all the while staying true to their DIY roots and vinyl-loving demographic.
The Champagne Socialists provide another hit for Slumberland with their latest 7” single, Blue Genes. According to their mostly fictional Myspace bio, they fancy themselves “wunderkinder sociables freewheeling in Convertibles,” and the title fits. The two songs are immediately danceable and perfect for that roadtrip mixtape, which isn’t surprising since the band is composed of members from The Royal We and Bricolage – two bands well-versed in the art of the perfect pop song.
First track, “Blue Genes” is everything I love about pop: catchy melodies, handclaps, and WTF-inducing lyrics. Upon first listen, it’s your typical sunny day track until you take notice of the title, coupled with the winking chorus: “These teens share more than blue jeans, if you know what I mean.” So congrats to The Champagne Socialists for making a song about kissing siblings an undeniable toe-tapper. Second track, “The Young Runaways” is equally infectious and maintains the overall retro feel to the music. The lyrics aren’t immediately discernable, but I get the sense that there’s some cheek behind it, and it makes it all the more interesting.
I guess it’s safe to say, as long as labels like Slumberland keep up their golden standard, pop snobs will have nothing to worry about. That is, until the Champagne Socialists are featured on next week’s episode of One Tree Hill.
