When I had read in Sound Magazine, that Trentalange was named one of the top 10 up and coming artists coming from Seattle with the potential to blow your mind, I was very interested to hear this project.
Trentalange is the project of multi-instrumentalist Barbara Trentalange, a veteran of the Seattle music scene. Formerly of the groups Spyglass, which she fronted for five years and most recently Crooked Fingers. This album is her second solo project her first was “A Photo Album Of Complex Relationships". That album garnered some positive press for this artist, so before listening to this project I went back to listen to her first and get a feel for what type of artistic statement was being made in her music.
Whereas Trentalange’s first album seemed a great deal darker lyrically and more consistently themed, this album upon first listen of “Awaking Level One” made me ask the question. What type of artist is Trentalange?
One of the most appealing things about “Awakening Level One” is Trentalange’s voice it does move me. Lyrically, she is very abstract but does paint a very visual picture with her lyrics, but what distracts from that in my opinion is the music, I really don’t think the music suited her voice. That’s why I asked myself, what kind of artist does Trentalange want to be?? Is she an alternative, industrial, break beat, rock, lounge, or trip hop artist?
It’s that question that hindered my listening, this is an album that is enjoyable but its not for everyone. There are 11 tracks and the track listing isn’t really conducive to just sitting and letting it play. I feel the arrangement of the songs could have been done so this album flowed better for the listener. If you can handle a mixture of sounds and styles, you can find something here to grab a hold of and appreciate as a fan of music.
