You either love or are offended by Jessica Delfino, and just so you know where I stand: I love her (I've previously mentioned her around her birthday last year). And when I say love, I don't mean in a stalking-creepy way, I just find her hilariously funny.
I think in some ways, she's probably more famous for her wonderful and wacky videos on youtube. We're talking millions of peepshow views!
So all her video hits ("Don't Rape Me", "I Wanna Be Famous", "My Pussy is Magic") are now available on her debut full-length album, I Wanna Be Famous, just released June 18th on Loud Mouth Records.
It's kind of unfair that most people will probably associate Delfino as that dirty woman that sings about "hotdogs" and "sandwiches", and, sure, there's plenty of those songs ("Only A Stranger's Cock", "Boner For Me", "No More War", "Ice Queen", "My Pussy is Magic"), but refreshingly there are songs about other things. Like being superficial ("Classified Ass"), or stereotypical cheapness of "Chinatown", and just general "I Hate Everybody". I especially love the group scat on "I Hate Everybody" (which sounds suspiciously like George Michael's "Careless Whisper").
I was happy to see that "I Was In Love With You" is re-recorded for this album. Listening to the original version on Dirty Folk Rock, I find that on the new version, there is a male vocal. I don't have the liner notes to tell you who sang that part.
There are so many great songs to represent Delfino, but I thought "Don't Rape Me" would best describe her. This song is very DIY, complete with a musical rape whistle. Possibly the only rape song you can dance to.
Jessica Delfino's I Wanna Be Famous album is out now. You can see her on July 3rd at The Slipper Room in New York with Dame Darcy (she is awesome, I own some of her Meatcake comics).
Trivia: The Catholic League absolutely loathe Delfino. In a press release:
Her performance includes the showing of an obscenely-titled video banned from YouTube that features her rapping about her vagina, complete with obscene pictures flashing in the background. Rapping about her genitals, she sings, ‘it will become your true religion.’
It makes you wonder why The League is watching her videos...
Update: In a few days, she'll be playing in Maine:
Saturday, June 28, 2008
Newbury Comics in South Portland from 3 to 4 pm (220 Maine Mall Rd., free) or at the St. Lawrence Arts Center at 9 pm (with Amelia Kutch at 76 Congress St., $12). Recommended for fans of Margaret Cho and the Blow.
