Mario Ishii Hernandez is From Bubblegum To Sky. His biography lists him as half Mexican and half Japanese, born in Texas, lived in Japan early in his life, and ended up in the US.
He started From Bubblegum To Sky in 1997, briefly performed as Seiko and Salome (named after his parents) in 2005, but currently using his original moniker.
Incidentally, after reading his biography, I thought it was cool that one of his influences are the Japanese pop duo Pink Lady!
Anyway, his third album A Soft Kill is released today, June 3rd.
I have been listening to this album the last few days for review, and I can tell you that it's drowned in 60s pop, disco, and rock. Many of his song have a familar rift to them, and you begin to realize how much you miss pure pop music, and that's what A Soft Kill is all about.
The song, "I Always Fall Part" really summarize what the album is about: summer fun pop music with dark and unconfident lyrics.
I won't be staying long since we met
Don't say you love me
Don't say it so
Don't say you love me
Don't say it so
I also really enjoyed the "stay in bed" song, "Even the Sunbeams", which has a great flute-type instrument the is played at the beginning of the song. It sounds like the closest thing to a love song. The song is currently on his myspace.
"The King of Failed" is another really good one. Similar to "I Always Fall Part", great guitar riffs and backed by depressing lyrics: "Run away, I'm yours/Run away, in time/All I ask for is a heart."
In many ways, From Bubblegum to Sky, reminds me a lot of The Cure - where it's accessible as pop songs, but there is an underlying darkness to it.
For the collector, there's a great $40 package that includes the vinyl, a t-shirt (your choice of girl or boy), and digital download. The first 100 orders will receive a hand-drawn art on a blank CD by Mario.
Bonus: Eenie Meenie is offering one of his earlier song for download: "Hello Hello Hi", which I thought sounded great, so I've included it here.
