Judging from all the buzz about free albums from NIN and The Charlatans (and absolutely no buzz for The Crimea), here's another free album from Jason Anderson called On the Street (January 10, 2008). It is available at Eca Records (download link is on the left).
Originally known as Wolf Colonel, he dropped that stage name to operate under his given name - probably because it is a little more intimate than "the wolf colonel". He's from New Hampshire, but it seems that he is currently in New York (from his recent tour dates).
Listening to his free album and his yet-to-be released album, The Hopeful and The Unafraid (to be released April 8, 2008), I get the impression that his fans are a really dedicated bunch. This is through his live recordings, where you can hear all his fans singing along and (assumingly) dancing.
He must really love this song, "July 4, 2004", as it's available on two recordings (and probably elsewhere). The version on The Hopeful is slightly different, featuring a woman with Anderson (sorry I don't have all the details because I only have a promo copy of the album and it didn't contain any liner notes).
This should be a great song live because the part of the woman would be replaced with the audience, singing along line: "I will wait for you" (audience singing towards Anderson).
One song, on the new album, that probably won't have any sing-along is "Wanting and Regret", a slower, but sweet, song. There's something really lovely when he sings, "love doesn't die, it just changes".
The rest of the album is a little more up-tempo, especially in the title track - which sounds like an old Spaghetti Western movie.
"The Hopeful and the Unafraid" should be an amazing song live, especially with that "la la la" part. You'd wish you'd shake that song....
The Hopeful and The Unafraid will be available in April, but you can find his other recordings issued through K Records. If you get the vinyl, you get a bonus free CD!
PS, "This Will Never Be Our Town" sounds better on On the Street, with its intro, than on The Hopeful, which sounds more produced and low-key.
