Terry Garland is a blues singer from Richmond, Virginia. His album, Whistling in the Dark, was released in 2006, but it looks like he's still going strong in '08 with some shows in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
So I wanted to talk about the CD packaging first. The whole art and design is by Richard Patterson, whose style looks very similar to Robert Crumb. The CD looks just like a record, with grooves. And even the backside of the CD is entirely black, resembles a PS2 game disc. Very cool.
I knew I was going to like Garland when the first few songs contains lyrics such as "When you wanna get by in a big man's world/You get bitchy" (from "Get Bitchy" written with Bruce Olsen and Buzz Montsinger) and "I've got the world, got it by its nuts/Because my girl loves me so much" (from "Memo to Jo").
Although you can take these lyrics as humorous, the way Garland sings it - he plays it completely straight. Which then makes you believe that these songs are from a true blues man, telling it as it is.
Don't believe me? Listen to "The Hard Luck Blues":
Times rolls on. First you're here and then you're gone. Life's no rehearsal, my friend it's one and done.
And check out that guitar playing!
See him on tour, he's playing tonight at JM Randall's.
