I first heard about Gallows' "Black Heart Queen" through iTunes "Single of the Week" for the last week of July 2007. The first thing I thought when I heard it: "These guys are LOUD."
Gallows, are a British hardcore (almost screamo) punk band from Watford. Their debut album, Orchestra of Wolves (2006), got amazing rave reviews from all the usual traditional magazines (BBC, NME, Kerrang!, etc). It's really no wonder that Epitaph snatched up these guys for distribution in the U.S. (the album was re-released last July). I'm not sure if their future albums will be through Epitaph Records, because as last April, they signed a "million pound record deal with Warner Brothers".[1]
Since fans in the UK have probably picked up their debut album (and probably the re-release with the bonus disc) already, I'm just going to talk about the four extra new tracks that Epitaph added to their release: "Sick of Feeling Sick", "Black Heart Queen", "Nervous Breakdown", and "Staring at the Rude Boys".
"Sick of Feeling Sick" first appeared as a b-side to their In the Belly of a Shark, and I believe this version might be the same one appearing on the US CD. "Black Heart Queen", as I previously mentioned, was the free song that was used to promote Orchestra of Wolves.
The album ends with "Nervous Breakdown", which is the very first Black Flag single, released in 1978. What's interesting to note is that this song is written and sung by Greg Ginn. The song is really more Sex Pistols influenced, than say the more hardcore sound when Henry Rollins became the primary singer and song writer.
The fourth song on this release is actually hidden and is The Ruts cover, "Staring at the Rude Boys" (Gallows retitled the song as "Staring at the Rude Bois"). I haven't heard the original song before, but from what I've gathered, The Ruts were a "reggae-influenced" punk band (pre-dated Operation Ivy). Gallows' version is surprisingly really good and is my choice song.
They are currently enjoying being featured on Guitar Hero III (for "In the Belly of a Shark"), Kerrang!'s "2007 Award for best British Newcomer", and a UK Top 40 single (for "Staring At The Rude Bois").
You can see what all the hype is about when they tour through your town... before they break up. Apparently, according to singer Frank Carter, he's already quit the band four times before they signed to a major label and he's already predict that the band "won't last five years".[2]
