The Village Underground's performance space is a funky brick-walled basement with blue light floating over the stage. I later learned that the event was because of a John Lennon Songwriting Contest. I had arrived in the middle of a guy with an acoustic guitar strumming "Over the Rainbow." At the end of the set, he would introduce himself as Dan Mills.
Girls Don't Cry would come on right after that set. They play pop-rock (the Kelly Clarkson influence mentioned on MySpace would be accurate in the sense that they're in the same genre) laced with 80s-style synth, and all five girls share vocal duties. They opened with their eponymous song. While the enthusiasm and energy was there, the guitars engulfed the room and nearly drowned out their voices -- and in old age (ha!), my ears are getting sensitive to sonic guitar booms. It would've been a great, fun 'everybody come on and party' song. But unfortunately, everyone missed it. They recovered on the next song, "That's the Sound," and you could feel the crowd getting into their set as they were bopping their heads. The set was about six songs, including "Cobain," on which Sora took the main vocals. They closed with a cover of Violent Femmes' "Add it Up," where guitarist Hannah broke out a mini accordion. Everybody dug it, and I hope they make an official recording of that song because no words can do a good cover justice. These girls not only play fun music, but have this kick-ass rocker girl energy. Needless to say, they're also an attractive bunch. They don't have any upcoming shows posted, but do check them out.
