Rachel Barton Pine is a renowned classical violin soloist, based out of Chicago, Illinois. She's currently on tour and her schedule list is up to 2008, but I'm just including her 2007 dates. More details on her website.
She started playing the violin at the age of three, and debuted with the Chicago String Ensemble at age 7.
Her first album was Homage to Sarasate (1994), playing the works of Pablo Martín Melitón de Sarasate y Navascués, a Spanish violinist.
Her press release biography doesn't list this horrible life-changing accident a few months after her debut album. I suppose it's irrelevant information to her music career, but I was really amazed at what strength she must have had to continue on... and to this day she's released about 12 albums.
The most interesting among them is her rock band tribute CD, Stringendo: Storming the Citadel (1997), featuring her original arrangements of rock classics like "Stairway to Heaven" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit". How this started: she played her rendition of "One" by Metallica live on Chicago's Rock 103.5. The listener response was so overwhelming that this lead her to record Stringendo.
The song I'm including here is "One" and "Medley of Scots Tunes" (with Alasdair Fraser on pianos). The medley song consists of "The Lament of Flora MacDonald," "The Waukin of the Fauld," "Miss Lyall or Mrs. Grant of Laggan," and "Timour the Tartar." It is from her 2-disc 2004 album Scottish Fantasies.
Her latest album is called American Virtuosa: Tribute to Maud Powell and if you want to check out excerpts from her new album, you can take a listen to her podcast.
PS, I have also created a Classical Group
