Midlake are a five-member band from Denton, TX. They're music is usually categorized as lo-fi and are compared to bands such as
Grandaddy,
Sparklehorse, and
The Flaming Lips. They actually started out as a jazz band in college (four of the five current members) and listening to these songs or any of their releases, they are far from that genre. They released an EP titled
Milkmaid Grand Army in 2001 and it went out of print, but they re-released it recently and it's also available on iTunes and other digital music stores. 2004 brought the release of their first full-length,
Bamnan and Slivercork. It was with this release that they gained a larger fan base (including me) and loyal fan/friend in skateboarder-turned-actor,
Jason Lee. He directed the video to their single "Balloon Maker". Although, they probably received the most exposure when music blogs started posting their single, "Roscoe", from
The Trials of Van Occupanther. This album is very different from
Bamnan and Slivercork and
Milkmaid Grand Army. It features more of a '70s folk rock influenced sound as opposed to their lo-fi, synth sound found on their other two releases. In an interview with
Culture Bully, Eric Pulido said about their influences for
The Trials..., "We immersed ourselves into the classic folk rock music of the 70’s so there were many artists that influenced us from that era. Some of which were Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, The Band, America, Jimmie Sheeris, etc.".
I chose these songs to post because "
He Tried to Escape" pretty much captures their lo-fi-ness and sometimes you just wanna go away for a little bit. And "
It Covers the Hillside" captures their '70s folk rock influence and also it's sort of lyrically reminiscent of "He Tried to Escape" in that they're going some place; going away; escaping. So, enjoy the talented guys that are Midlake.
