New band Little Green Cars heads out on a first U.S. headlining tour this spring and plays the 7th St. Entry on April 1.
This Dublin-based quintet, currently riding high on the single The John Wayne, counts Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol amongst their biggest fans.
Recently signed to Glassnote/Island, they smartly hired producer Markus Dravs (Mumford and Sons, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Bjork) to helm their first full length, Absolute Zero (out March 26 in the US) and are somewhat road-tested already, after stints opening for The Antlers and Jake Bugg.
These up-and-comers are a live show to catch for any fan of Irish country tinged rock, Band of Horses, The Lumineers, and Band of Horses, and before they blow up after two upcoming weekends at Coachella.

It's that time of year again: SXSW. Of and around this time of year (March), we get a massive influx of British bands in the States. That's really a benefit to everyone involved because the UK bands usually do a mini-USA tour or side shows. Expect to see more UK bands in the States (and expect us to cover many of them as possible).
Manchester's The 1975 is heading out on the road for their new EP, Music For Cars (out March 4th on Dirty Hit). Expect the band to return to the studios after the US tour to finalize a debut album, co-produced by the band and the award-winning Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Foals).

Chip Taylor has been writing and releasing music since 1970, so he's no stranger to country folk music fans. In 2001, after meeting a then-new musician Carrie Rodriguez .....
With SXSW 2013 to be in March, we're already starting to see announcements for showcases. For those that can't afford to travel to SXSW every year, the good news is that really good bands are doing mini-tours of or around the SXSW dates. Chances are your favorite bands will be playing live near you.
You should know-- we love Carrie Rodriguez here. She's a singer/songwriter, that's more in tuned with country music, than the typical folksy musician. I believe she's still based out of Austin, Texas, and since 2001, she's been performing showcases at SXSW. So, if you're in the Texas area, you should definitely try and make it out to a show.
It's been two years since her mostly covers album, Love and Circumstance, but she's back with a fifth solo release, Give Me All You Got to be out on January 22nd via Ninth Street Opus. In support of the album, she'll be heading out on tour this year.
Her final stop on the three-month long tour will be in Minneapolis at the Cedar Cultural Center. Expect her to perform "Lake Harriet", which I believe is about one of lakes in Minneapolis (great bike trail!). You can grab the song for free at her official website.

We love Kosha Dillz. Last year, Dillz played one million SXSW shows, and this year he promised to top it! If you want to help him finish his Kosha DIllz is Everywhere: The Hustle to Happiness documentary his Kickstarter just launched last night (January 3rd).
And uh-oh, looks like Dillz is coming to Minneapolis/St Paul! It is really far in advance, but I'm penciling those dates on my calendar. I think Dillz's music will go well with Minnesotans because there is a massive Atmosphere and Rhymesayers audience he can tap in.
Here are some dates that Dillz will appear at:
Jan 19-23 TBD Sundance Film Festival Park City, UT
Jan 24 TBD Los Angeles, CA
Feb 4 Kickstarter Close Off Celebration Street Performance
Feb 16-20 NACA National Convention Nashville, TN
Feb 21/22 Private Gig Atlanta, GA
March 1- 9 Booking midwest run
March 10- 17 SXSW Music Festival x OY VEY SXSW!
March 22-23 NACA Mid-Atlantic Festival
April 4-7 NACA Northwest Conference St. Paul, MN
Just a reminder that Whitehorse's album The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss comes out January 15th, check out my review. At the time of that writing, they were mostly doing Canadian tour dates, but it looks like the band are finalizing on some USA dates. I am told that they "certainly will" be doing SXSW this year, so stay tune for more tour date announcements.

Heyerdahl is a new Norwegian band, which MTV is calling "ambitious experimental electro-tinged pop", while The Line of Best Fit is comparing them to my favorite Japanese director, Takashi Miike.
Obviously, they are getting a lot of attention, particularly when Øya Festival booked the band on the strength of their single "Mirage" (even before the band even played live).
Their upcoming album, ØEN will be out 28th January 2013 - look for them to play at SXSW 2013.
Minneapolis' groove/pop band West of Aldine will be performing songs from their debut album, Undivided, this February 1st at the Fine Line Café. Also on the bill: American Revival, Bigtree Bonsai, and Lake Avenue.
West of Aldine are also quite excited to play SXSW this year - so excited that they'll be doing a warmup/sendoff show at The Kitty Kat Club just prior to Austin. I don't see a definite date on the KKC's calendar, but expect it to be free or marginally priced.
If you want to support the band, know that they donate 20% of their merchandise to high school music departments through their "Keep The Music" program.
W♥M Radio is available on iTunes. It's now much easier to find us and add us to your automatic podcast download.
Before SXSW, I had to talk about Jane's Addiction and their appearance at the grand opening of Minneapolis' new concert venue, The Brick. You can read about it here.

Nada Surf at Waterloo. We are in line for the Third Man Records truck. We can hear some Nada Surf. Sounding good. Heard them at Mellow Johnny's acoustic on Thursday as well. Bike ride earlier today weather has been great. Need a shower and then back to music
Ian McLagan & The Bump Band at Yard Dog Day Party (03/17/12)
AOL is not working so here hoes an update for day. We saw Ian McLagan from the faces at the Yard Dog Party. It's an art shop with space in back for bands and parties. He doesn't really have a voice, but for 66 years he sings his heart out with a joy that so many others miss. Saw a couple no name bands as well. Not worth any more mention than that.
Now we are sitting outside the LBJ museum on a beautiful night waiting for Mumford and Sons. There must be 10,000 people inside.
Overall really good shows and they have been able to make the jump from small to large crowds in a short period of time. I'd seen them once before when they were third on the bill at the 400 Bar with Laura Marling.
They brought on a marching band from the local high school at one point. It was quite the scene with at least 40 people jumping down on the stage....
New material sounds great (no info on when it's coming out)....
No picture because sitting behind a fence didn't work well...
Early this afternoon, we tried to get into multiple day parties and had no luck, so we eat BBQ sitting on a curb and then went to Flatstock, a poster show.
Edward Sharpe is finishing up and ended with "Home", which gets a lot of airplay in Minneapolis.
Tough to be the first band at an all day event. No crowd to speak of and not enough beer consumed. Reaction was limited at best from the crowd. They were ok nothing special. Lead singer was pretty monotone...
Good crowd, held their attention, which is a good sign. The venue was well over a mile from the main area.
I love the dual drummers. I know Channy [Leaneagh] is the star, but the idea of a lead and rhythm drummer is cool. Ever since I saw Phil Collins and Chester Thompson in Genesis dueling on "Los Endos", I love the idea.
Overall, Poliça will get some good buzz from SXSW.
Best band so far. Only 20 min set and they struggled with the mix, but I thought they had more variety than any other bands so far. Great harmonies, etc.
Reunions are always a tough gig. Die hards want the old stuff and the band paid to play the new stuff. The DB's were no exception. Set consisted mostly of new, 2 older songs and one cover The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows".
I loved it, especially when they announced the bass player was Mitch Easter (Lets Active, REM producer, etc). For Power Pop fans this was a dream come true.
Let's hope the new LP [Falling Off The Sky] is enough to get them to tour this summer.
waterloorecords.com is live streaming their shows. They are also offering a free 2012 MP3 compilation album, featuring these tracks:
Blitzen Trapper - Love The Way
Father John Misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Honey Honey - Angel Of Death
Howlin' Rain - Phantom In The Valley
Ruthie Foster - Welcome Home
Shearwater - You As You Were
Spoek Mathambo - Let Them Talk
Tribes - Whenever
Jimmy Cliff - World Upside Down
Truvium - In Waves
Like the live streaming, the free download might be only temporary, so grab them while you can.
The Shins. I love James Mercer's hooks. But when it comes to playing to a big crowd, he has work to do. The band is really good, but there is very little interaction with the crowd. The place was reasonably close to full from what I could tell. But the between banter was minimal.
As my sister tells me, Austin loves a cheap show; I guess the Counting Crows will have another big crowd. I know Adam [Duritz] will be more engaging.
Now off to plan for tomorrow... We decided against the wrist bands so we are living off of the free stuff.
Keane was a lot like the Kaiser Chiefs. Play the hits and a few new ones. With a 30 min slot it's what you'd expect. The lead singer isn't as good front man as the guy from the Kaiser Chiefs.
Now at St Auditorium Shores to hear The Shins. Way to crowded to stand and watch inside. So we are across the street and will hope fully see them on the jumbo screen.
Great set they know how to work a crowd. I have seen footage from Glastonbury and now live in a courtyard. They played "Ruby", "I Predict a Riot" and were really tight.
The lead singer is working the crowd getting them jumping up and down...
They rated highest so far for my wife this year.
UPDATES Tried to get into NPR party for Poliça. Hundreds in line, so no chance.
Just saw Adam from Counting Crows walking down 4th Street.
Listening to the Band of Skulls at the Filter show. Can't get in, line is way too long...
New fashion statement here is cut off jeans for guys and some of the guys who man the cyclecabs wear tan colored bodysuits. It's gross.
SXSW is here. I will be updating reports from Dan as I get them. Please read our previous SXSW coverage. Artists we previously covered: La Sera and Howler. Photo album: SXSW 2012.
Tango in the Attic. I didn't get them at all. They tried at times to be a band with twin guitar interplaying, and then they would thrash and use samples/loops. At one point the bass player was playing a Tom Tom, which my wife Judy said reminded her of the SNL skit about more cowbells.
French Wives - I really liked these guys. They sounded more of a traditional Scottish pop band, really good lead singer; the bass player was the best we had seen all day. The harmonies were great and they were unique enough that you didn't think they were ripping any other band off.
This is the band with the lead singer is female and a redhead.
Good 4 piece pop band from Los Angeles. They play 3 minute pop songs with jangly guitars. Both guitarists can play lead, one tends to favor a surf sound in his solos. Think The Ventures and you get the idea.
I'm having a hard time judging her voice. She is buried in the mix. I do like them and will hear most of the set.
Quilt is the second band of the day. We found them as we searched for the Third Man Records truck. They sell SXSW exclusives so it's worth searching for.
As for the band, Judy thought they sounded like Low. Three piece band with male/female harmonies. They play repetitive dream pop with some 60's organ and twin guitars.
It's great to sit in the grass and listen to music that isn't thrashing like the first band we saw.....
Our favorite Jewish rapper, Kosha Dillz will play at every SXSW show as humanly possible, which is awesome! There is no excuse not to catch him this year.
He even threaten that he "might rap in line at the airport."

Their band, still unnamed. Possible names: Phonebook Inspector and All Talk
