Singer/guitarist Enrique Chi answers these questions:
1. Tell me about your latest album A La Deriva? Was it more difficult to write and record for since your debut In Deo Speramus or Aguardiente?
In a lot of ways it was easier. When we recorded our first album, those were glorified demos that we chose to put together. We had only locked in a solid lineup and really become a band a few months prior to recording it. I think our identity as a band was so young and new that we were often second guessing ourselves. By the time it came to recording A La Deriva, a few years had passed and we'd played a few hundred shows. We felt a lot more confidence in who we are as musicians, who I am as a songwriter and who we are as a band. I think we may re-visit a few of the tunes from our first album at some point in the future.
2. What was it like to work with Steve Berlin of Los Lobos fame?
It was truly an amazing experience. We feel so fortunate to have met Steve. Not only is he a wonderful musician and producer, but we agree philosophically about many aspects of creating music. It made the recording process an exciting and rewarding experience for everyone. Admittedly, we were nervous at the beginning of the session, but once the nerves died down, we were in a really productive and creative environment. Steve was emotionally invested for every note we recorded, even when tracking minor overdubs or small textures. I've had a lot of friends that have had difficult experiences with producers, so we feel very lucky.
3. You are playing this Saturday, August 23rd, at the Cedar 25th Anniversary show. How did you guys get involved in this?
I think it came through our booking agent, but we are really excited about it. A friend of mine in Minneapolis told me about the Cedar a few years ago and I've been watching what they do from a distance. It is a really cool venue so we are pumped to be a part of what they have going on.
Bonus Question 4. What is the difference between Kansas City in Missouri and Kansas City in Kansas? Is there a rivalry like Minneapolis vs St Paul?
They are technically two different cities but side by side. The actual urban core of what they consider the 'metro area' on the Missouri side and that is where we all live and hang out. I don't think there is a rivalry, everyone is pretty friendly about it and I've noticed that some of the artistic community is moving into the old homes in Kansas City, Kansas.
Making Movies will be playing at The Cedar's 25th Anniversary Dance Party on Saturday, August 23. The show is FREE, so there's no excuse to not attend if you live in the area. Also on the bill are De La Buena and Worldwide Discotheque. $4 Pabst tallboys, plus contests and dancing.
