For a limited time, you can download Southerly's Youth Sessions at Bandcamp for free.
Each song was written, recorded, and mixed by Krist Krueger (aka Southerly) at his own studio Sonic Sandbox in Portland, Oregon.
Trivia: Regarding his EP, Champion of the Noisy Negativists, it was inspired by his friend Jeff Hanson (Minneapolis resident by the way of Kill Rock Stars).
We get so many emails that it's sometime refreshing to get a band that gets it right: Grounders. All I'm really looking for is a brief biography and cover artwork to their album or single. Also the words "free" and "download" helps my inbox search.
Grounders is a band based out of Toronto, they've recently played at NXNE (along with 5 million other bands!) and will be playing with Young Magic at the Garrison this July 5th.
Unfortunately, they're already maxing out their available download (soundcloud has this scam that limits how many times a song can be downloaded)… but if you're net savvy, there are ways around this.
Chester French's new album, Music 4 TNGRS, came out today via Karmaloop Music. The duo is offering the lead track, "Next Big Thing", for free on AOL's Spinner. They are comparing the band to MGMT and Chromeo … so if you like that dancey teenage music, you'll love Chester French.
Also, you can stream the whole album on their website, chesterfrench.com.
Brandi Carlile is heading out on tour. I'll never forget her unexpected appearance at the Fine Line a few years ago.
She is giving away a free three-track EP called Live at Bear Creek EP over at NoiseTrade. The live songs are songs from her latest album, Bear Creek.
Her tour dates are too numerous to mention here, so click here to see the full schedule.

I like Girl in a Coma. They recently announced their summer 2012 tour and giving away "One Eyed Fool" via soundcloud.com.
The song came from their latest album, Exits & All the Rest, which NPR named one of 2011's best albums and recently won an Independent Music Awards for Best Independent/Alternative Rock Album.

Not much is known about Icons of Andria, other than that it's a recording project between Rodney Sellars (of The Year Zero) and Ken Negrete & Fabiola Sanchez (of Familiar Trees). The collaboration is described to produce an "eponymous Sci-fi concept album" and features some nice original artwork from Sellars.
So far a couple of songs are available as free downloads via soundcloud.com.

I know I just mentioned Ladyhawke, but this is too good to pass up: a free download of "Black White and Blue" remixed by The Big Pink Remix.
Pip Brown (Ladyhawke) had this to say about her new musical direction: "My passion for the guitar never went away. When I was a teenager I listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and then I got into Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana. So I tried to think of Anxiety as a collision between the '60s and '90s. Of course, it came out sounding like neither!"
