With the holidays here, we're seeing an increasing Christmas gifts in the form of free music. Keep an eye on our Christmas specials, where I've already collected over 15 free xmas songs.
You can grab "Holly Happy Days" from the Indigo Girls for free at Vanguard Records. The song is one of 12 holiday songs from their 2010 Christmas album.');
As previously mentioned as Vu's favorite young band at the moment, The Good Nature, is giving away a free song for "Video Voyeur". I quickly looked over the process: it looks too complicated. You have to facebook them then fill out a form to be on a mailing list and then realize that the Vevo video content won't actually play unless you're on Vevo and/or Youtube. Like I said, too much work. Good luck.
And as predicted that they will sweep over America soon, they are set to debut on television here for the Jimmy Kimmel show on January 23rd. Set your DVR now!
Plug, aka Luke Vibert, is giving away a free song, "Feeling So Special" at Ninja Tune Records.
The new album Back on Time is collection of unreleased d'n'b (drum and bass) tracks recorded over 15 years ago. It will be out January 9th, 2012 (a little later in the month for North Americans).
Steven Hefter, aka St. Even, is "Having Sex" with Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner! This is a free downloadable song via Fanatic's Soundcloud.
I did get a chance to listen to it, I like the melody, and the song is kind of about nothing really, it sort of gives you a sense that they're having sex because there's nothing else going on. I liked it enough to give it a few listen. If the rest of his debut album, Spirit Animal, is this good, I'll definitely give it a listen this weekend.
In the mean time, enjoying "Having Sex":
The Grates has a new album, Secret Rituals, out now via Dew Process/Universal Music. You can grab a free song "Turn Me On (Whyte Fang Version)" over at vibedeck.com. Watch their latest music video for "Sweet Dreams" at youtube.

It's been over six years since their last album, but legendary hardcore band Biohazard is back with Reborn In Defiance (to be released January 20, 2012). This isn't some half-assed comeback with one original band member, this is all four founding members (Billy Graziadei, Bobby Hambel, Evan Seinfeld and Danny Schuler).
As a special thank you to their fans, Biohazard is giving away "Vengeance Is Mine", fans can download the track now at facebook.com/BiohazardDFL.
Rock on!

If you live in the New York area, you can experience the weird industrial noisey/shoegazy songs live:
Sole And The Skyrider Band is from Arizona, and, from my understanding, have just come back from a West Coast tour with their "Hello Cruel World Tour". But wait, there's more, they'll be doing their mid-west and East Coast shows soon:
9/17 Chicago: Abbey Pub
9/21 Brooklyn: Knitting Factory
9/22 Portland: Geno's Rock
9/23 Cambridge: Western Front
Free download of "Living In The End Times" can be downloaded at Soleone.org. Sole explained that the beat came from "Mo Money, Mo Murder", one of his favorite songs from the 90s.
Some of our favorite bands are from Manchester (Smiths, New Order, Stone Roses, Oasis, etc), so it's only natural that I've picked Manchester's Clockwork Radio to spotlight here.
They are a new EP called Sketch to be released September 26th. You can preview the EP with a free download of "So Will I" via Soundcloud.
Their previous EP, The Soul Harmonic, can be downloaded for free at clockworkradio.co.uk

HOPE AND LOYALTY
I was confused, I thought this was a public free track, Bankai vs. Abortifacient: "Four Litres of Hope", but it's not. You can hear the song at soundcloud. The record label, ALL CAPS Records, based out of Melbourne, describe the track as "drumstep / dubstep / 8-bit / kuduro". If anything, 'dubstep' is fast becoming the buzz word of 2011.
See fourlitresofhope.com for more animation and stuff.
Courtesy of The Loyalty Firm, their flagship band, My Education, recently appeared on Daytrotter. You can download for free "My Education/Theta Naught: Sound Mass" at daytrotter.com. You may remember My Education from an EP that I revieweda few years ago.
My Education's latest album is called Sound Mass, which you can get on vinyl (which comes with a free digital download) at bandcamp.
The EP is just a taste of his forthcoming debut album. Bill Ryder-Jones had this to add, "When I left the band I wasn't playing much music at all but in 2009 a friend got in touch asking if I would write something for this short he was making, which I did. It's pretty much the only thing I wrote that year but the process opened another world up to me. We thought it'd be nice to give it away to the people who have been interested in what I've been doing on my own and also to hint at the future a little bit. My album, which is a soundtrack inspired by a novel, is pretty much a progression from the things learnt when writing for Leave Taking."
PS: would you like your band to be briefly mentioned on the sidebar? Include the words "free download" in your email and chances are, I'll consider it.
Deez's hit song, "Radar Detector" got remixed by Thee Loving Hand's Tim Goldsworthy - details on free download at Lucky Number.

"A Message", the song, can be had as a free download at bandcamp.
According to Dunson, the song came to him while riding the Amtrack train. "The whole idea of hopping the train solo to different cities to handle business made me feel like a vagabond in a way... I really felt like a rolling stone."
The free track, "Sexy, No?", is described as layers of harmonizing guitars with "an unstoppable rhythm section". Sounds good, no? Yes? Download the track from hiddenshoal.com.

Anna Calvi - Free Album Streaming
Domino is proud to announce the release of the self-titled debut album from Anna Calvi, on March 4. Co-produced by Rob Ellis and recorded in London and France, Anna Calvi’s debut is an astonishingly confident record; the unique strengths of her songwriting, singing and guitar playing all jumping out of the speaker together.
The ghosts of Nina Simone and Maria Callas lurk in the corners of Calvi’s muse, as does the classical romanticism of Ravel and Debussy, a set of disparate influences informing Calvi’s thoroughly modern music.
You can find my first EP at my bandcamp and you can download the song “A Woman” for FREE. Also, the music video for "Faceless, Nameless" feat the upcoming film "Bluebird" is also up online so if you get a chance check it out. Links are below!

Forbidden Friends mp3 revealed and shows announced!
Pitchfork debuted the first song from Hutch Harris' new project Forbidden Friends this morning! pitchfork.com
Feel free to download/share the mp3 for "Tiny Hands".
FF have also announced their first two shows, which are appropriately here in Portland:
March 8 - Portland, OR @ Valentines - Record Release Show!
The live band will be Hutch Harris (vocals), Kathy Foster (drums), Westin Glass (guitar), and yours truly on bass.
About the single:
Forbidden Friends is part secret society, part torrid love affair. The kind of experience you cherish, yet would kill to keep secret. Well as of this moment the secret is OUT. You can wash your dirty sheets as many times as you want, but once the world knows all your steamy indiscretions there's no going back! Might as well post all your (formerly) deep, dark secrets as your next status update. Forbidden Friends may have hoped to keep their little club private, but it's too late now! The gossips have spoken and won. Let's tell EVERYBODY. Please help us!
Forbidden Friends is a new band from Hutch Harris, lead singer and mastermind of The Thermals, Portland's last great post-pop-punk-power trio. Initially conceived as a way for lovers to send hidden messages in plain view (isn't there an app for that?), Forbidden Friends is now a legitimate, public work of art. The band is at once old fashioned (acoustic instruments, mono mixes), forward thinking (reference-less, incredibly danceable), and timeless (classic lyrical themes of love and desire.)
Forbidden Friends will release their debut single, "Tiny Hands", on the Kill Rock Stars label March 15, 2011, on vinyl (7") and digital download. It is accompanied by the b-side "For You". Harris played the basic instruments (drums, guitar, bass, vocals), and was assisted in the studio by his fellow Thermals Kathy Foster and Westin Glass, as well as Michael Lerner of Telekinesis, on percussion. Both songs are truly upbeat and fun, and are the perfect introduction to this exciting new band.
Gorillaz

PASTE MAGAZINE PREMIERES TWO NEW SONGS FROM "BEST OF WHAT'S NEXT" SONGWRITER ANTHONY D'AMATO
MY OLD KENTUCKY BLOG NAMES D'AMATO TO "TEN BEST SONGS OF 2010"
|
|
Meanwhile, praise continues to roll in for D'Amato's LP 'Down Wires,' which the young indie-folker recorded in a Princeton University dorm room. My Old Kentucky Blog named "My Father's Son" one of the Ten Best Songs of 2010, while Twangville raved "D'Amato is definitely one to watch." The album debuted at #29 on the Itunes Top 200 singers/songwriter chart, earning an official Indie Spotlight selection this fall. Critics have raved about his gorgeous melodies and whip-smart lyrics, comparing him to Neil Young, Joe Pug and The Tallest Man on Earth in features and premieres from AOL Music, WXPN (Philly NPR), KUT (Austin NPR), The Star Ledger, No Depression, The Asbury Park Press, and many more.
Keep an eye out for upcoming features from The New York Times and NPR Music this month. D'Amato also recently confirmed dates with Pete Yorn & Ben Kweller. This weekend he'll perform once again at the annual Light of Day benefit and then return to NYC for a Jan 19 show at Rockwood Music Hall on a bll with Findlay Brown.

Amanda Palmer Goes Downunder
“Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under” is her latest offering as a solo artist. A collection of live and studio tracks with an Antipodean theme, the album berates a lover for his love of vegemite and celebrates a lady’s nether regions with the new single ‘Map of Tasmania’. All material for this album was lovingly penned for and recorded in Australia and New Zealand. It includes some special tributes in the form of covers of Nick Cave and New Zealand’s Peter Jefferies.
Having just struggled to be released from her major label contract, Amanda has been trailblazing in internet and creative distribution with an effective new model for distribution of music. “Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under” will be available exclusively for her Down Under fans as a physical release through Liberator. However, true to Amanda’s unique music model where fans are able to choose their contribution for download, packages and once in a lifetime experiences they can go to her website for more details. It’s been a successful model for her latest record which saw Amanda perform the hits of Radiohead on the ukulele.
“This whole record is a love letter to Australia and New Zealand, “ Amanda says flirting wildly with her southern neighbours. Amanda has made no secret of the fact that she’d love to relocate to her “second home” in Melbourne during the New York winter and keep her summer home in the Big Apple the rest of the time.
And with that... here's a freebie tune (Map of Tasmania) to single to coincide with her album release of Amanda Palmer Down Under and her national tour in January/February.
