Back to school bringing you down? Sloan will turn that frown upside down!
Hitting the 400 Bar on September 21st is Canadian power-pop quartet Sloan, a band that has stayed mostly under the radar in the States despite churning out a catalogue of fantastic and catchy songs over the years. Having celebrated 20 years together last year with a tour and a new album (the Double Cross), Sloan are back this year to promote 1994’s excellent and underrated Twice Removed release on vinyl.
Twice Removed was the band’s second full length album and originally put out by Geffen Records. Despite the album’s wild success in Canada, Geffen didn’t do sufficient promotion of the record and, as a result, sales dwindled elsewhere. To make matters worse, the band was soon ousted off the label. Now, there have been plenty of rock and roll injustices over the years, but witnessing a gem like Twice Removed disappear into the ether is simply a crime! I dare you to listen to this record and not dance around the room. (WTF, Geffen?)
Thankfully, after dodging rumors of a breakup, Sloan regrouped and formed Murderecords, an independent label that has not only released every one of their records since but also boasts a roster of other great Canadian indie-rock acts.
Sloan continues to tour and record albums, each member contributing vocals as well as songwriting. Pick up Twice Removed on vinyl at Sloan’s website or do yourself a favor and see this delicious ear candy live.
I really like Tilly & The Wall. Even before I saw them play 80/35 Music Festival, I was in love with their 2008's O album.
It looks like the band will make their way to the 400 Bar on October 6th with Nicky Da B. I am hoping they bring their dedicated tap dancer to the show!
Tilly & The Wall's latest album, Heavy Mood, will be out October 2nd on Team Love. Check out this "remix of a remix" from Cycad for their song "Love Riot":
Also, wondering why it took the band four years to release a new album? The answer is simply: life. Three band members got married (with children?) and two moved to Los Angeles. It should be interesting to see how all this affected their songs? Well one thing's for certain, they still have a lot of energy and fun.

We've seen Hunter Valentine a few times at the 400 Bar, and, yes, they're coming back to the 400 again.
The new tour is in support of their forthcoming album, Collide & Conquer, which is coming out October 23rd, 2012.
What's exciting is that the band appeared in Showtime's "The Real L Word", which aired in early August. I haven't seen it as I don't have cable, but I'm pretty sure you can probably youtube it.

I previously mentioned TEEN before. They're three sisters (plus one close friend), and their debut album, In Limbo, just came out at the end of August via Carpark Records.
You can stream the entire album at Soundcloud.
Here's my theory about sister-bands: they have great harmonies that can only exist because of their closeness and knowing each other really, really well. The only problem I can think of for TEEN is their band name.
Anyway, tour dates below:

The Longfellow 3, Electro 35, Mathis Grey, and The Karma Kicks (four bands!) are all playing at the 400 Bar today (September 13th). The show is for The Longfellow 3's Linger Longer album release.
The Minneapolis band loves late '80s Minneapolis alternative/garage rock (The Replacements, anyone?), and they hope their new album reflects their love.
As for the other number-band, Electro 35, their singer John Fellman is based out of Indiana, but his band is based out of Minneapolis.
If my Corin Tucker show ends early, I might swing by the 400.
