This was a strange mix: hip-hop's FrontRunners Entertainment presents Honorable Trees album release party and pop/rock Said the Whale show at the 400 Bar on 4/20. Both groups drew in different audiences, with no cross-over fans.
Chains of Love was a no-show due to their Visa's expiration date (they had to be back in Canada at midnight, otherwise the border guards was going to arrest them and make sure they never enter the USA ever again). Remember a time when you can drive across the border with just a driver's license?
4/20 is generally known as marijuana day, it just made sense to hold a hip-hop show. The first event was put together by Frontrunners Ent. The showcase features a ton of artists, from Mayhem The Truth, Brand Nu, Young Wo, Kaust, Why So Serious (with Christina Fisher), Hitmane & Killa Wayne and more. I actually couldn't tell you who's who, since this wasn't my scene, but what I can tell you is that setup was next to nothing, because it just requires an MC and a mic and a DJ to spin the beats.
There were five-minute breaks before one or two rappers would come on stage. Everyone looked like they were having a blast, especially when more than 10+ performers were on stage. If you've ever seen a Rhymesayer show, it may look like chaos on stage - but everyone knows what to do - as each rapper is given his spotlight. To be honest, the hip-hop portion of the show could've have gone on until closing time.
Said the Whale came on stage and was surprised at the diverse genre of music in Minneapolis. They said that the last time they were here (September), that they had a jazz band open up for them!
The band was on tour to promote their new album, Little Mountain, via Hidden Pony/EMI, so they did some songs from the album, including "We Are 1980", "O Alexandra", and "Big Wave Goodbye". Songs were sung alternatively between Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft, so the songs seems personal (Worcester) and catchy pop songs (Bancroft).
I think they ended their set with "Loveless" and their encores included keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown and drummer Spencer Schoening's rendition of "Seasons", this is followed by the full band assembly for "My Government Heart" and a semi-acoustic version of "Curse Of The Currents" (this song sounds like it was lifted from the Decemberists, it's quite good).
